This exquisite mid-20th century bentwood box has been positively identified as the work of Richard Dicks. The signature on the dark brown felt bottom was made with a black marker, and its very hard to spot. The copper sheets of the sides and lids are embossed with Crows and Beaver. The interior has been lined with soft brown suede leather.

The naturally formed patina speaks to its authenticity and age.

Richard Dicks is a First Nations artist from Bella Coola, British Columbia, known for his expertise in creating copper-clad bentwood boxes. His work is influenced by the Kwakwaka'wakw (Kwakiutl) style, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of the Pacific Northwest. Dicks's boxes are celebrated for their intricate designs and craftsmanship, making them highly sought after by collectors and art enthusiasts.

In addition to his work with copper-clad boxes, Dicks has also created other forms of art that showcase his versatility and deep connection to First Nations traditions. His pieces often incorporate traditional motifs and symbols, bridging the gap between contemporary art and ancestral practices.

Dicks's contributions have been featured in various exhibitions and auctions, highlighting his role in preserving and promoting First Nations art. His dedication to his craft not only honors his heritage but also educates and inspires others about the rich artistic traditions of the Bella Coola and Kwakwaka'wakw peoples.

A bentwood box is a waterproof box that originated with the Indigenous peoples of the Northwest Coast of North America. The boxes are made from a single plank of wood (typically red cedar) that is steamed until it is pliable enough to be bent into shape. They were used for many things including storage, cooking, transportation of fresh water or food, musical instruments and sometimes for burial of highly esteemed loved ones.
